Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy is a specialized form of therapy performed in the water. Our Physicians location features the HydroWorx 500 Aquatic Therapy Pool that can help improve strength, endurance, balance and mobility while enhancing pain-free motion.
*Ability to perform daily tasks *Endurance and conditioning *Balance and coordination *Flexibility *Walking *Relaxation *Muscle strength, power, and endurance |
The Properties of Water Include:
Temperature - Assists in relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow to injured areas which aids in the healing process.
Hydrostatic Pressure - Aquatic therapy also utilizes hydrostatic pressure to decrease swelling and improve joint position awareness. This is important for patients who have experienced joint sprains, as when ligaments are torn, or balance becomes decreased. The hydrostatic pressure also assists in decreasing joint swelling which results after injury.
Viscosity - The viscosity of water provides an excellent source of resistance. This resistance allows for muscle strengthening.
Buoyancy - One benefit of aquatic therapy is the buoyancy provided by the water. While submerged in water, buoyancy assists in supporting the weight of the patient. This decreases the amount of weight each joint has to carry. This aspect of aquatic therapy is especially useful for patients with arthritis, healing fractured bones, or who are overweight. By decreasing the amount of joint stress it is easier and less painful to perform exercises.
It’s important to remember to transition out of the water so that the body can gain dynamic stability and adapt to normal loaded stresses of gravity and everyday life.
